artist statement

I wish I could recover only the beautiful memories of my childhood, but when I try to call them forward, painful memories come forward too. My work is both a longing to return to the warmth and innocence of the past, coupled with a desire to reconcile the sadness that lies beneath.

Using handmade and mechanical processes, I construct images from humble resources. I am drawn to found objects and images (marbles, technical diagrams, aquarium pebbles, stickers, marionette puppets, enamel bowls…) and household items (food coloring, cardboard, terrariums, safety-pins, straw…). I stage these kitchen sink elements then work them with photography and design to speak on my ambivalence towards nostalgia.

As a graphic designer and art director, I've worked with a range of businesses including eyewear and apparel brands, media agencies, musicians, artists, chefs and cultural institutions.

Most recently, Evans Wittenberg and I co-founded Questionable Ethics, a journal dedicated to the convergence of psychotherapy/ psychoanalysis and the arts.

We also run an art print studio called Figures on a Landscape.

"Quality Above Everything” is my design ethos, inspired by the legendary Apple Pan restaurant (serving burgers and pies on Los Angeles’ Pico Blvd. since 1947).
